SOLASTA Bio
Founded in May 2020 by Professor Shireen Davies and Professor Julian Dow from the University of Glasgow's School of Molecular Biosciences, SOLASTA Bio specializes in developing peptide-based bioinsecticides that effectively target harmful pests while preserving beneficial pollinators.
The Vision
SOLASTA Bio was started to address a critical challenge in global agriculture: the need for effective pest control that doesn't harm beneficial insects like pollinators. Recognizing that 75% of food crops depend on pollinators, yet insect pests cause over $70 billion in crop losses annually in the U.S. alone, the vision was to develop next-generation green insecticides. These insecticides aim to be environmentally friendly, species-specific, and sustainable, mitigating the drawbacks of traditional synthetic chemicals that dominate 94% of the insect control market.
Development and Features
The foundation of SOLASTA Bio lies in four years of translational research led by Professor Shireen Davies and Professor Julian Dow at the University of Glasgow's School of Molecular Biosciences. This research focused on creating peptide-based bioinsecticides that are both effective against target pests and safe for non-target organisms, including pollinators.
Support from the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences (MVLS)
The College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences played a pivotal role in transitioning SOLASTA Bio from concept to company. Professor Davies collaborated closely with the College Innovation and University Research and Innovation teams to access various funding and support mechanisms. These included BBSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) awards, which facilitate impact from biotechnology and biological science research. The development was supported by significant funding from the BBSRC Responsive Mode and a major multi-partner European project.
The Impact
Since its formation in May 2020, SOLASTA Bio has emerged as a pioneer in the field of green insecticides. By focusing on species-specific, peptide-based solutions, the company addresses the pressing issues of insect resistance, lack of specificity in traditional insecticides, and the environmental concerns associated with chemical residues. This approach not only offers effective pest control but also aligns with increasing regulatory controls and consumer preferences for sustainable agricultural practices.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, SOLASTA Bio is well-positioned to lead in the development of sustainable pest control solutions. The company's innovative approach addresses the urgent need for insecticides that are both effective and environmentally responsible. With ongoing support from academic and research institutions, SOLASTA Bio aims to expand its impact, contributing to global food security and sustainable agriculture.
