Transfer into, within, and out of Science

This section details the transfer policy used for students who are currently registered on a

  1. BEng/MEng, Arts (MA), Social Sciences (MA SocSci), or Life Sciences (BSc) degree and would like to transfer into a Science (BSc, MSci) degree.
  2. Science (BSc, MSci) degree and would like to transfer to another Science (B.Sc, MSci) degree

The policy detailed on this page follows the Student Transfer Policy

Degree Options

At undergraduate level, there are serveral types of degrees that can be awarded that can be categorised into Profession degree programmes or Flexible degree programmes.

For the purpose of this policy, we will refer only to flexible degree programmes which are

*note that degrees offered in Engineering (BEng/MEng) are listed as professional degrees.

The bottom of this page provides links for students currently registered within the College of Science & Engineering on a Science (BSc, MSci) degree who would like to transfer to another College.

To see the full extent of degrees please refer to the Undergraduate Study list and pick a subject of interest. Navigating to 'Degree and UCAS codes' should give an fair, although not exhaustive, indication of which subject combinations are available and under which programme.

Science (BSc, MSci) Degrees

This policy refers to degrees that are offered within the College of Science and Engineering from the following Schools

  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Computing Science
  • School of Geographical & Earth Science
  • School of Mathematics & Statistics
  • School of Physics & Astronomy

Which covers the undergraduate degrees listed - BSc/MSci degree options.  Please note that not all degrees have an MSci option.

Transfer Policy

Typically, we will consider transfer requests at the end of Year 1 or at the end of Year 2.

At the end of Level 1

  1. Students need to meet minimum progression requirements on their current degree.
  2. Students need to meet current entry requirements for the degree they want to transfer to.
  3. There needs to be capacity within the new degree.

Assuming all three points are satisfied then either

  1. The student can request to transfer into Level 2 of the new degree only if they meet Level 1 subject requirements of the new degree. Please note that we usually require all Science students to have obtained 120 credits with 80 credits worth of Science courses by the end of level 1.
  2. The student can request to transfer into level 1 in order to meet level 1 subject requirements of the new degree – usually under the assumption they have not had a previous unsuccessful attempt at level 1 courses core to that subejct.

At the end of Level 2

  1. Students need to meet minimum progression requirements on their current degree.
  2. Students need to meet all level 1 progression requirements, or equivalent, for the degree they want to transfer to.
  3. There needs to be capacity within the new degree.

Assuming all three points are satisfied then either

  1. The student can request to transfer into level 3 of the new BSc (hons)/MSci degree only if
    • they meet level 2 subject and progression requirements of the new degree, and
    • they satisfy section 15 of the Science & Engineering BSc/MSci Generic Undergraduate Regulations (Entry to an Honours or Integrated Master Degree Programme), and
    • they satisfy section 3.3 (for BSc (hons)) or section 3.4 (for MSci) of the Science & Engineering BSc/MSci Supplementary Regulations.
  2. The student can request to transfer into level 2 of the new degree in order to meet level 2 subject and progression requirements of the new degree – usually under the assumption they have not had a previous unsuccessful attempt at level 2 courses core to that subejct – and satisfy both generic and supplementary undergraduate regulations.

All requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and therefore if you do not meet any of the above, please email science-chief-adviser@glasgow.ac.uk detailling your circumstances and which degree your would like to transfer to and at what level and we can offer more specific advice.

Before beginning your degree

It is not the intent to detail the transfer policy for students who are new to the University and would like to transfer into Science before they begin their degree.  We will where possible try to accommodate such requests but it is more likely that students will be advised to make the transfer request at the end of Year 1 as detailed above. Please refer to the Student Transfer Policy for more explicit advice.

Application Process

Transfer into the College from another College or from Engineering, or transfer to a degree in another Science School within the College

To make a transfer request, please complete the transfer form.

For level 2 students: Please note that transfer requests into level 2 of any degree involving Geography, Geology or Environmental Geoscience need to be made before the Christmas break to ensure students can take part in the compulsory residential field class that is only available to students on a relevant degree.

For all other requests, the table below gives the deadline for making a transfer request and when you can expect to receive feedback on your request.

Once you submit your request, it will be consider by the next available deadline. Transfer complete refers to when you can expect your student record to be updated to reflect any successful transfer request.
