Alasdair Fergusson graduated BSc in Geography in 1965 and had a career as an exploration Geologist working in the oil industry in the UK, Libya and Alaska before moving to Canada in 1970. He generously gave a share of his estate to the University’s Geography and Geology departments, a total of CA$36,308.

His wife Helen shared that “Alasdair always appreciated his university education and the opportunities it gave him for employment and travel. This is his way of giving back a little.”

The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences have directed Mr Fergusson’s gift to set up a fund which can be used to support student field trips to study environmental change particularly for students from underrepresented backgrounds, as well as providing state-of-the-art lab and field equipment that will give students hands-on learning that prepares them for meaningful careers.

Head of School, Professor Todd Ehlers said:

“The Sustainability and Earth Sciences Student Endowment will be of huge benefit to students for generations to come. By ensuring that students can access up to date specialist equipment and educational travel opportunities, we can continue to foster an exciting learning environment. This will enable students, regardless of background, to realise their dream of a University of Glasgow education and open doors for future research and employment. We are deeply grateful that he chose to entrust us with a legacy gift, allowing his impact to live on through the work we do.”
