Black History Month 2025

Plenary Invited Speaker Professor Jason Arday,  ‘Where are we Runnin'? Thinking of a Way Forward.  We find ourselves in a global political storm which is becoming almost unbearable for all concerned. This lecture attempts to think of a way forward. 

Jason Arday is Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education, and a Professorial Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge. He was formerly a Guest Editor on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme and listed fourth on the prestigious Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 in 2023.

Professor Arday has previously held the position of Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Glasgow, School of Education; Associate Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology; and Deputy Executive Dean for People and Culture in the Faculty of Social Science and Health. 

Jason is a Patron of the Adult Literacy Trust (ALT) and Get Further. He was formerly a Trustee of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Thinktank for 11 years. Presently, he is a Trustee of the British Sociological Association (BSA). Jason sits on the Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) National Advisory Panel, the NHS Race and Health Observatory Academic Reference Group and the ITV Cultural Advisory Council.

The event will be followed by a poetry recital by CJ Adebayo Mowako, (MA History of Art and Music student) at the University of Glasgow and performance by Tawona Sithole (University of Glasgow’s UNESCO Artist in Residence) will conclude with refreshments and a networking session.

This event has been organised by University of Glasgow Equality and Diversity Unit in collobration with the Global Majority Network (University of Glasgow - MyGlasgow - Equality & Diversity - Information for Staff - Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff) and is funded by the Ferguson Bequest.  Professor Thomas Ferguson (1900-1977), Henry Mechan Chair of Public Health (1944-64), bequeathed his estate to the University, with the instruction that the money should be used to “foster the social side of University life.
