Defending Scotland's Heritage

Published: 31 May 2023

Learn about the challenges affecting Scotland's historic places, Historic Environment Scotland

The Defending Scotland’s Heritage resources explore how iconic historic places like Edinburgh Castle and Skara Brae are threatened by the modern world through climate change and heritage crime and how we can defend them through sustainable measures and conservation work.

Join the students of Castlebrae High School as they research the impact of climate change on Craigmillar Castle and the measures needed to protect it in their film, made in collaboration with the BBC.

Learn more about the challenges facing Scotland’s historic places by downloading the Climate Change Fact Sheet (PDF) and Conservation Fact Sheet (PDF).

Create the effects of beach erosion for yourself in the downloadable Climate Change Activity (PDF)

Take the biscuit challenge to understand how buildings can be protected in the downloadable Conservation Activity (PDF)

To find out more about climate change, heritage crime, conservation, sustainability and heritage careers, follow this link to the full Defending Scotland’s Heritage webpage
