It has already been a jam-packed semester, and our teams have been busy creating opportunities to connect with students and receive feedback on what matters to them.

At Welcome Week in September, we surveyed 142 students on AI and student skills.

The key takeaways were:

  • 74% of students had been using AI already
  • Over half of students surveyed expect to use AI some of the time or often
  • 65% expected to develop their AI skills at University

It was great to see Professor Andy Schofield, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University visiting the stalls at Welcome Week.

In October, we had 14 participants at our student panel on AI led by Holly Thomson, User Researcher. All 14 participants had used AI, with 10 stating that they use it regularly.

The most used AI softwares were ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

The Welcome Week survey also contained one question on student skills. Students were asked ‘What is your biggest concern about developing skills at university?’

The top response was “I don't know what skills employers are looking for” followed by “I have financial constraints”.

You can view the full report on AI and student skills here. Please note you need to be signed into your University account.

You can also explore related resources on the LISU SharePoint page, including recordings from the AI Symposium.

It was fantastic to have Ayush Garg, VP of Education in the SRC with us at both the Welcome Week stall and the AI student panel.

At our next Student Panel, we will explore some of the new C4L courses currently being developed for the academic year 2026/2027, and we are looking forward to hosting another Learning & Teaching stall at Re-Welcome Week to connect with students again.

Thank you to our colleagues for their input in shaping student survey and panel questions, and to our students for taking the time to provide these valuable insights.
