Committee Positions

Interested in joining the Committee? Find out more about the available positions:

Branch Secretary

This is the lead officer and negotiator of the branch. Main duties would be major negotiations with management as well as dealing with all the correspondence/e-mail for the branch, deciding whether to file, bin, action or raise the matter at the Executive Committee.

Assistant Secretary

Acts as deputy to the Secretary when required, particularly with regard to administration and correspondence. Negotiating with management would not necessarily be required. This position can be combined with that of Minutes Secretary.

Chairperson

Chairs all branch meetings (Executive Committee meets at least once a month), Annual General Meeting and any other General Meetings that may be called.

Vice-Chairperson

Acts as deputy for the Chair, standing in when Chair is unavailable.

Treasurer

Looks after all the financial affairs of the branch, which are audited once a year by the Branch Auditor. The majority of financial decisions are taken by the Executive Committee, although in emergencies the Treasurer has the authority to liaise with the Chair and Secretary to purchase something, which is approved later by the Executive Committee.

Minutes Secretary

Records the meetings of the Executive Committee and General Meetings. This position can be combined with that of Assistant Secretary.

Membership Secretary

Provides and processes all applications for membership. This requires updating the UNISON RMS membership database, for which training is given and assistance is available. Also required to recruit new members from a list of new staff provided by Human Resources

Communications Officer

Maintains the branch's web site and manages the branch mailing list.

Education Co-ordinator

Circulates details of training provided by Unison, and maintains records of training undertaken by committee members. Also responsible for organising induction course for new members of Committee after AGM.

Equality Officer

Responsible for receiving all equal opportunities related material and for ensuring those on the Committee are kept up-to-date with developments.

Health & Safety Officer

Young Members Officer

Responsible for keeping in touch with all members under the age of 26.

International Officer

Will keep abreast of international affairs concerning UNISON members, reporting to the Executive Committee where appropriate.

Ordinary Member

Represents the general membership rather than a specific area like that of an Area Rep, and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Area Steward

Local representatives (in College/Service/School/Department/Building) to act as a liaison between members and the Committee.

Helper

Helpers are needed to assist with mailings and other general duties as and when required.
