About the Centre for Spatial Reasoning
The Turner Kirk Centre for Spatial Reasoning is a developing cross-disciplinary research centre seeking to explore spatial reasoning for improved outcomes in a wide range of contexts. We have a vision of a world where spatial reasoning is understood and developed as a key to releasing human potential.
The Centre's mission is to lead research into the understanding of spatial reasoning and its application in a wide range of contexts, working with national and third sector organisations, commerce and industry to radically enhance learning, creativity and productivity across the population.
The Centre's aims are:
- To further the understanding of the relationship between spatial reasoning and the numerous fields where it has been identified as valuable – combining context-specific findings into a synergistic whole – as well as developing a stronger understanding of the underlying cognitive processes involved.
- To enhance mainstream education for learners from any background by exploring spatial reasoning and its development as a core component of learning.
- To explore the potential of spatial reasoning to enable career changes and cross-disciplinary skills development, supporting diverse routes through education and into work.
- To investigate the need and use of spatial reasoning skills for the workforce with a focus on the potential to improve capability, productivity and creativity across a wide range of fields.
The Centre is named with thanks to the Turner Kirk Trust. The Turner Kirk Trust funded initial research work which supported the launch of the Centre and continues to fund the Centre's flagship project, the STEM SPACE Project. Without the support and vision of the Turner Kirk Trust, the Centre would not exist, so their contribution is gratefully recognised in the naming of the Centre.
