Postgraduate Research
Cultural Industries provides opportunities to undertake PhD research in an outstanding research environment with high-quality supervision from leading international experts. We support students in all aspects of cultural, creative and media industries and cultural policy research – with recent projects focussing a wide array of topics including national and international media and broadcasting, equality, diversity and inclusion in cultural and media work, governance and regulation, cultural planning and development, film and cultural policy, sport, music, gaming, and social media.
Cultural Industries provides research students with exceptional intellectual and pastoral support through 121 meetings, events and training, and through the activities of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research

Study options
The Cultural Industries subject area offers two PhDs:
Creative & Cultural Industries PhD
Duration: 3 years full-time / 5 years part-time
A Doctor of Philosophy may be awarded to a student whose thesis is an original work making a significant contribution to knowledge in, or understanding of, a field of study and normally containing material worthy of publication.
Thesis length: 70,000-100,000 words, including references, bibliography and appendices (other than documentary appendices).
We also offer the possibility of PhD by Practice. If undertaking a practice-based doctorate the thesis will consist of a shorter word length, to be negotiated with your supervisor (normally 30,000 - 40,000 words) in addition to a substantive piece, or pieces, of practice.
