Dr Jala Rizeq

Biography

Jala is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Glasgow. She joined the Mental Health and Wellbeing group in 2021 and is a member of the UK Trauma Council and the Glasgow Climate Change and Mental Health Network. Jala has a BA (Honours) in Psychology and an MA and PhD in Clinical Developmental Psychology from York University, Toronto, Canada, where she also completed a Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Methods. Jala also completed a Clinician Scientist Training Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice at the University of Glasgow. Jala’s main clinical and research expertise are in child, youth, and family mental health and wellbeing.

 

Research interests

In her research, Jala focuses on identifying the mental health outcomes experienced by young people following early adversity and as a function of global stressors/crises (e.g., climate change). She is also interested in young people’s future thinking and its intersection with wellbeing and daily functioning. Jala’s main areas of research include:

1)  Early adversity and trauma, with a particular focus on the interplay with neurodevelopment and the outcomes of care-experienced children and young people.

2)  Stress and coping in changing environments, with a particular focus on climate change impacts.

3)  Future thinking, with a particular focus on understanding future thinking across development and measuring biases in future thinking and ways in which we can optimize this process to support young people's mental health and wellbeing.
