Safety Committee Members

Role of the Safety Committee

The safety committee will provide guidance and advise on health and safety issues within the School, namely, to address concerns and to monitor general compliance with health and safety regulations. The committee will meet approximately three times a year to discuss and address matters of concern and to update the policy if necessary. Safety audits will be carried out at least once a year to ensure all areas of the Institute remain safe environments to work in and to provide help and advise on any improvements that may be required. 

The Chair of the Health and Safety Committee maintains communication with the Head of School, to whom issues requiring higher management decisions will be reported. The School’s Executive oversees the development and efficacy of mechanisms for the implementation of safety policy by ensuring that policy proposals submitted by the Safety Committee are properly considered and that accepted proposals are supported by adequate resources. 

Safety issues should be reported to the Chair of the Sii Safety Committee, Dr Tansy Hammarton (tansy.hammarton@glasgow.ac.uk), or in her absence, the safety coordinators for SGDB: Dr Susan Gannon (susan.gannon@glasgow.ac.uk) or Dr Caroline O’Connell (caroline.clucas@glasgow.ac.uk), or for CVR: Aude Aumeunier (Aude.Aumeunier@glasgow.ac.uk) or Sharon Burns (sharon.burns@glasgow.ac.uk).

SGDB Technical Floor Coordinators

Floor Manager Duties

• Implement, communicate, police and report on safety policy
• To serve on the SGDB Safety Committee
• Be familiar with the building safety policy
• Be familiar with the HSE reports (available from GT)
• Ensure all eye wash station are flushed every week
• Carry out safety audits on other floors as directed
• Implement action points raised by audit on own floor
• Restock first aid boxes (consumables from HA)
• Hold a central copy of all floor COSHH forms
• Coordinate SGDB equipment servicing and request repairs (not groups)
• Report to Susan Gannon or Tansy Hammarton on above duties as requested
• Report to Harry de Koning on radiation issues

Where possible all floor safety issues should be resolved locally, if not any unresolved issues should be brought to the attention of Susan Gannon or Tansy Hammarton for further action.

Action points raised by safety audit should be rectified within in an agreed time scale and where Estates resources are required should be brought to Susan Gannon or Tansy Hammarton.

Genetic Modification Work

There are three GM committees:

• GM37: For staff in the Bower, Boyd Orr, Davidson, Sir Graham Davies buildings (except for staff previously affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and the McGregor building), Graham Kerr, Joseph Black, Lab of Human Anatomy, Wolfson Link and West Medical Building, and all staff previously affiliated with the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences, or who are not affiliated with the College of MVLS.

• GM223: For staff based at Garscube.

• GM318: for staff previously affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and the McGregor building, BHF-GCRC and all hospital-based staff.
