Four SMLC postgraduate research students and a visiting postdoc researcher were accepted on to Harvard University's prestigious Institute of World Literature (IWL) summer school, which this year takes place at Harvard University itself in July. As an institutionally affiliated member of IWL, SMLC will normally have up to two places held in reserve, but as this is the first year of our membership, we were exceptionally allocated four places.
This annual summer school is an extraordinarily enriching intellectual event in the Comparative Literature/World Literature calendar, with advanced seminars taught by some of the leading international scholars in the field. PhD students in the final stages of dissertation and postdoc ECRs were invited to submit applications, and the Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation was able to offer two bursaries to help towards attendance costs. We were fortunate in the end that the IWL offered places to four of our colleagues -- PhD students Rachel Eager, Keni Li and Yunjing Ouyang, as well as our Ukrainian visiting postdoc, Yaroslava Kovalova -- and waived registration fees for all four. They are thoroughly enjoying the experience so far, and promise a full report in a future newsletter!
