Call for Papers

The University of Salamanca, the Pontifical University of Salamanca, and the Pontifical Faculty of Theology San Esteban are pleased to announce the International Congress “The School of Salamanca: Past, Present, Future”, to be held in Salamanca from 9 to 13 February 2026, marking the fifth centenary of the School of Salamanca (1526–2026).

In 1526, Francisco de Vitoria was appointed to the Prima Chair of Theology at the University of Salamanca. A circle of influential scholars soon formed around him, contributing significantly to philosophy, law, economics, science, and theology.

The organisers invite contributions that explore the legacy and contemporary significance of the School of Salamanca in areas including (but not limited to):

  1. History: History of the Americas; Modern Spanish and European history; Hispanic universities; History of the University of Salamanca

  2. Languages and Translation: Indigenous languages; Language policies; Grammars and vocabularies; Colonial codices; Latin texts; Historical linguistics; History of the book and reading

  3. Law: International humanitarian law; Ius gentium; Legal theory; Human rights; Slavery; Equality, liberty, and dignity

  4. Canon Law: Foundations of canon law; Church–State relations

  5. Philosophy: Spanish and Ibero-American thought; Political and moral philosophy; Medieval and modern philosophy

  6. Economics: History of economic thought; Just price; Usury; Legitimacy of trade and interest; Monetary policy; Economic ethics

  7. Theology: History of theology; Pastoral and sacramental theology; Church history

  8. International Relations: Origins of international institutions; Totius orbis and ius communicationis; Just war theory; The concept of peace

  9. Science: Theory of science; Origins of modern science; Physics
