Professor Ariadne Vromen

  • Head of Division - Political and International Studies (School of Social & Political Sciences)

Biography

I joined the University of Glasgow as the inaugural Head of Division of Political and International Studies in the School of Social and Political Sciences, in February 2025.

Before moving to Scotland, I was the Sir John Bunting Chair of Public Administration at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, and Deputy Dean Research for the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), for nearly five years. Prior to this, I was a teaching-research academic for over 20 years in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney, and became Professor of Political Sociology in 2015. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, and a former President of the Australian Political Studies Association.

My long-term research interests include: citizen engagement, digital politics and governance, women and the future of work, policy advocacy, and young people and politics. My latest book is: Filippo Trevisan, Michael Vaughan & Ariadne Vromen (2025) Story Tech: Power, Storytelling and Social Change Advocacy, Michigan University Press.

My current research projects are:

Storytelling and story listening for policy change, a new collaborative and comparative research project on how governments and civil society organisations incorporate listening as a form of citizen engagement, and to highlight fairness and the experience of inequality, with Filippo Trevisan of American University in Washington DC, Michael Vaughan of London School of Economics, and Laura Davy, ANU.

Australian Women’s Working Futures (2017-2025), a collaborative, multi-disciplinary project originally funded by the University of Sydney SREI scheme, an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grant, and an ARC Discovery Project. This research has had widespread media attention and policy impact. A co-authored book has been contracted by Bristol University Press, to be published in late 2025.

I also have a developing focus on knowledge brokering, university-policymaker relationships, and how evidence and ideas are used in policymaking.
