Research interests

Research interests centre on problematic forms of consumption, particularly those considered risky or 'addictive', the ways they are experienced by different social groups and their impacts on public health.  Research focuses in particular on:

  • Gambling and problem gambling; its causes, consequences and cultural meanings
  • Theories of risk, addiction and consumption
  • Public health and policy regulation, particularly in relation to disadvantaged social groups
  • The regulatory and historical forces involved in the formation of modern patterns of consumption

    This longitudinal qualitative study explores the social context of gambling and problem gambling, focusing on the ways that behaviour changes over time among a range of demographic groups.

  • ‘Tracking Vulnerability and Resilience: Gambling Careers in the Criminal Justice System’.  With Professor Corinne May-Chahal, University of Lancaster.  £360,000.
    This three year project explores patterns of risk, vulnerability and resilience among offenders in prisons in England and Scotland.  It will examine the relationship between crime and problem gambling, and the interaction of these with mental health problems, substance misuse and patterns of deprivation. The team will also collaborate with the International Resilience Project at Dalhousie University, Canada, to develop a new tool for measuring resilience.

    This project continues the longitudinal exploration of gambling careers among a cohort of individuals, and expands to focus on the impacts of behaviour on wider social networks, particularly in terms of issues such as debt, employment and criminal activity.
