We were delighted to welcome Dr Sutirtha Bandyopadhyay, Assistant Professor of Economics from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore, to the School in Summer 2025. This visit reflects the School’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and advancing impactful research.

As part of his visit, Dr Bandyopadhyay delivered a thought-provoking seminar on the labour market implications of the “Veblen effect.” Using data from India’s Periodic Labour Force Survey, his study explored the relationship between inequality and average work hours and how this dynamic varies across income groups. His findings - including that higher inequality drives longer working hours, especially among non-poor households - stimulated engaging discussions with faculty at the Business School.

Dr Bandyopadhyay completed his PhD in Quantitative Economics at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi, in 2017. His research spans applied welfare economics, development economics and food and agricultural trade, with ongoing projects examining the spatial impact of trade liberalisation, subjective well-being, and intra-household gender dynamics and poverty.

The Internationalisation team look forward to strengthening ties with IIM Indore, developing opportunities for joint research, publications, and academic exchange.
