This semester saw the launch of a new Advancing English for Maths and Statistics Students course, extending our existing provision in the Adam Smith Business School, the School of Social and Political Sciences, and Linguistics. The course supports over 120 postgraduate taught students, offering targeted development in academic language, communication, and literacies tailored to the needs of Maths and Statistics disciplines.

This new in-sessional, credit-bearing course complements our extensive pre-sessional provision, and is a significant and exciting development that reflects growing recognition of the importance of disciplinary-specific in-sessional support. The course is designed to help students navigate academic expectations, communicate effectively in their field, and build confidence in their academic voice. These in-sessional courses also play an important role in supporting acculturation and community building, aligning with broader institutional goals around internationalisation as well as making connections to employability and the transferability of academic skills beyond university.

We hope this initiative will pave the way for further provision across the university — with Engineering currently under consideration as the next area of expansion.
